The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey (general)

half-22-01

My guest for the Happy Half Hour #22 is my friend, Amanda BrownNot only is Amanda one of my favorite friends, she's also my assistant. Which is kinda weird, but also 190% awesome because I get to work with one of my best friends.

Amanda made her first appearance on The Happy Hour on episode #3. She's back today with a review of her favorite episode from 2016, and some new happy half hour questions for 2017. You'll hear her favorite music, meal, and advice. She also shares what she would tell her 20-year-old self and where she'd love to live for a year.

You may not know you love Amanda, but trust me, you do. Without her The Happy Hour would be a little less happy. Y'all enjoy catching up with Amanda, and make sure to tune in next week for my conversation with Lisa Bevere.

Having just moved to a new city, and busy with work and family, author Stephanie May Wilson knew there had to be an easier way of creating deep friendships as a busy adult. So she wrote out some questions, invited over a few girls she barely knew, and as they answered the questions, they began to share their stories. That first night they laughed, cried, and spoke God’s truth into tender areas of each other’s lives and before they knew it, strangers became friends, and friends became best friends. Those questions became a 6-week small group guide that has achieved the same friendships in communities all over the country. Whether you're looking to start a cooking club with old friends, to go deeper with new friends, or to help a group of girls you lead connect in a deeper way — our lives are so much richer when we have best friends to share them with, and this guide is the perfect way to get there! Click here to download a free copy of the first week.

Happy 2017!! I am so excited to start off the year with Rachel Cruze as my guest for Happy Hour #122 is Rachel Cruze. As a #1 New York Times best-selling author and seasoned communicator, Rachel helps Americans learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She’s authored two best-selling books: Love Your Life, Not Theirs and Smart Money Smart Kids. The daughter of Dave Ramsey, she joined Ramsey Solutions in 2010 and uses the knowledge and experiences from growing up in the Ramsey household to educate others.

In today's conversation, we talk about what it was like growing up as a Ramsey, and the lessons she learned in a money conscious family. We chat about teaching our kids about the finiteness of money, and not letting our past mistakes with money keep us from making better choices in the future. Rachel also shares about her newest book about being content with your own life, and not coveting the lives around you. She shares how covetousness affects our finances and how she fights it with gratitude.

My guest for Happy Hour #121 is Erin Loechner. Erin is the founder of Design for Mankind, and has been speaking and blogging for more than a decade. Her heartfelt writing and design work has been showcased in The New York Times, Lucky, Parenting, Dwell, Marie Claire, Elle Decor, Huffington Post, and a two-season HGTV.com web special, garnering more than one million fans worldwide. She has spoken for and appeared in renowned international events for clients such as Walt Disney World, IKEA, Martha Stewart and Home Depot. Now nestled in a Midwestern town, Erin, her husband, and their children strive for less in most areas except three: joy, grace, and goat cheese.

If our conversation sounds like a personal counseling session, that's probably because it was. God has been doing a lot in my heart about where I find my approval, and my conversation with Erin was so timely and therapeutic. We talk about social media - the benefits, but also the pitfalls and dangers. We also chat about her upcoming book, Chasing Slow, and her thoughts and pursuits of a slower lifestyle. I read her book earlier this fall and highly recommend it. You can pre-order today for it's January 10 release.

Y'all, let me just take a quick minute to say thank you so much for an incredible year. 2016 was a great year for The Happy Hour with more than 3 million downloads! I'm so thankful for you listening to the show, loving it and sharing it with your girlfriends. You make this show possible and I am so grateful. We have some exciting things planned for 2017, so make sure to stay tuned. Enjoy your New Year's, have a happy hour with a friend, and we'll see you on the other side!

On today's show, we catch up about Danielle's latest Netflix binges, the qualities she values in her best friends, how she recharges with naps, massages and quality time with her kids and the dream of being a never-realized dream of being a ballerina.

I loved catching back up with Danielle, and I know you'll love hearing from her again. And from The Happy Hour team, very Merry Christmas to you and your family! We're praying the Lord would be near to your family this season and that you would experience the glory and grace of Jesus.

My guest for Happy Hour #120 is Kennesha Buycks. Kennesha is a Southern transplant from Alabama to the Pacific Northwest. She and her family now live in the Seattle area. Kennesha has a heart and passion for connecting others, gathering, and seeing those around her flourish in ways they could never imagine. She often expresses this passion through various creative mediums, including inspirational styling and design. When Kennesha is not busy being a wife or a mama to her four kids, she spends her time writing, blogging, and encouraging others.

Kennesha and I have been trying to connect for nearly a year, and the time has finally come! In today's episode, we chat and commiserate about being old enough for a 20 year high school reunion and our anxieties about actually attending. Kennesha shares about her life before Jesus, and her journey to following Him even at the potential cost of sacrificing a relationship.  And you'll hear about her work with Restoration House and the balance and challenges of running a ministry and business. Finally, you'll love learning about Kennesha's children and how she and her husband are working hard to break generational cycles in their family.

I hope you enjoy the show today. Make sure to tune in for the last two shows of the year - this week's Happy Half Hour and next week is episode #121 with Erin Loechner.

My guest for Happy Hour #119 is Ginger Gilbert Ravella. Ginger is a military wife, mother of five, stepmother of two, widow, writer and national speaker.  At 36 years old, she faced the sudden tragic loss of her husband in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the horrors that followed. He left behind five beautiful children, all under the age of 9 years old.  Her late husband, Major Troy Gilbert, an Air Force F-16 pilot, gave his life while saving twenty Special Operation soldiers, defining a true American war hero. Ginger now shares her heart-wrenching story of loss and hope and is the Director of the Speakers Bureau for The Folds of Honor, a non-profit charity who raises educational funds for fallen and wounded soldiers’ families.  She travels internationally and speaks on behalf of the foundation.  She is remarried to another widower, Colonel Jim Ravella, who lost his wife to breast cancer.  Together, they share their testimonies at churches and have recently written an upcoming book, “Hope Found”, to encourage anyone who seeks peace in life’s times of suffering. Ginger and Jim currently live in San Antonio with their children.

In our conversation, Ginger shares about learning the devastating news that her husband had been killed and his body taken. She tells about the days and months following his death and the depression that gripped her, but how God rescued her and taught her to not waste her story. In an unexpected twist, Ginger tells about meeting her now husband, their short dating relationship and quick marriage and how they've learned to mesh two different families with similar stories of grief and loss.

Grab your tissues because this episode had me in tears. Ginger's honest testimony of wrestling with God in her despair and depression resonated with me so much. If you have faced tragedy or extreme suffering, I think you'll feel like you have a friend in Ginger, and feel encouraged by her vulnerable transparency.

My guest for the Happy Half Hour #20 is my friend Jessica Honegger, founder and CEO of Noonday Collection. Jessica is old fave around here at The Happy Hour. She's been on episode #5, #55, and one of the guests for the very first live event

Jessica and I were able to get together and record in the actual flesh at her office here in Austin. We make our rounds through our normal half hour show questions, but I think you'll love hearing her dream of a communal life that she's having to let die, the quality of vulnerability that she values in her best friends and the best advice she's every received.

I know you'll enjoy today's show and hope you feel inspired by my conversation with one of the very best business women I know.

My guest for Happy Hour #118 is Emily Ley. Emily is the Founder and Creative Director of Emily Ley Paper & Gifts. She is also the creator of the bestselling Simplified Planner—a daily agenda for what matters most— and author of Grace Not Perfection. Raised in Pensacola, Florida, Emily graduated from the University of West Florida with degrees in English, creative writing, and public administration. She later became the executive director of the city ballet. From there, she worked in nonprofit management and public relations before launching her brand in 2008. Following the success found at its online home, the Emily Ley brand quickly grew to be carried in retail outlets across the United States and around the world. Emily has been recognized with numerous awards, including Best New Product at the National Stationery Show as well as being named a Top 10 Designer to Watch in 2015 by Stationery Trends Magazine. Emily lives with her husband and three children in Tampa, Florida.

Emily shares about growing her business from the ground up, all while remaining a debt-free company. She talks about difficult learning curves and decisions that she has had to make to maintain the company values - including a recent decision to cut down on wholesale to be able to better connect with the customer.

Because of the recent release of Emily's first book, we chatted about the book writing process, how her book was born and the painstaking decisions of a cover design. And Emily also shares some of her family's easy and totally doable holiday traditions.

I loved getting the chance to get to know Emily. I know you're going to love her, and feel inspired by the way that she has grown her business, while staying true to her initial goals and values.

My guest for today’s episode is Ann Voskamp. Ann is the wife of a down-to-earth farmer; a book-reading mama to a posse of seven; and the author of the New York Times bestseller One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Arewhich has sold more than one million copies. Her latest book, The Broken Way: A Daring Path into the Abundant Life released in October 2016.  Millions do life with her at her daily photographic online journal, one of the top 10 most widely read Christian websites:  www.annvoskamp.com

Admittedly, I was a little nervous about chatting with Ann. She has a sophisticated and incredibly intelligent aura about her that intimidated me from afar. But, gracious, I loved talking with her and getting to know her a little bit. In our conversation, Ann shares about the heart behind her newest book, The Broken Way. We chat about the temptation to present a polished life, but how God uses our brokenness to bring healing to our own hearts and perseveres the hearts around us.

We chat about everything from their adoption journey to the refugee crisis to living modern day Esther lives. If you need a hug and a good kick in the pants, this is your episode. I think you'll feel so encouraged by Ann and also a push to use your influence to be a minister the oppressed around you.

Alli Worthington is my guest for Happy Hour #114. Alli is the author of Breaking Busy: Finding Peace and Purpose in a World of Crazy, speaker, and the Executive Director of Propel WomenHer goal is to help women live the life they were created to live. Alli co-founded multiple companies and has helped individuals, small business owners and Fortune 500 companies be more successful. Her no-nonsense, guilt-free take on business, family and balance has lead to appearances on The Today Show and Good Morning America. She has written for Huffington Post, Fox News, Redbook and more. She, her husband, Mark, and their five sons live outside of Nashville, TN.

In our conversation, Alli shares about her life as a working mom with a household of boys. She's a big advocate of personal freedoms - which goodness, I think we could all learn a thing or two from - like, taking the pressure off ourselves to do the things that don't fit within our natural giftings or capacity. Alli and I chat about our strengths and the sexy strength of woo that neither of us possess.

If you've ever questioned your giftings and if you should pursue them, make sure to stick around for the last few minutes of the show. I felt so encouraged by Alli's motto to show up, love people, be herself and not quit.

And just in case you're wondering, I made a promise in my conversation with Alli to read the Screwtape Letters before this episode aired and of course, I haven't done it. But you should. And maybe send me a summary.

She is the creator of the Choose Joy Project, a random-acts of kindness initiative to honor the life of her late husband Joel. Her life's greatest role is that of Mommy to Milo and Ellis. Sarah is a one time NYC transplant who now makes her home in Oklahoma, where the best sunsets on earth are found.

On today's show, Sarah shares her personal story of struggling with infertility, only to be followed by her husband's cancer diagnosis. She shares the painstaking three year journey of his diagnosis, treatment, cancer return and finally his passing. The details of Sarah's story are heartbreaking, but I think it's her perspective and response that will leave you feeling speechless and inspired. She describes how her suffering afforded her a relationship with God that she wouldn't have had otherwise, quoting Job 42.5 "I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you."

You're going to need your tissues for this one. And to learn a lot more about Sarah's story, you can grab her book From Depths We Rise here.

My guest for Happy Half Hour #17 is Kari Sowers, a consultant to creatives and companies. She is an Intellectual Property attorney who helps her clients protect and license what they create. Kari is the host of Manifest Collab, a podcast and community for builders, makers, entrepreneurs and creatives.

Kari first appeared on the Happy Hour for episode #64. It was one of those special episodes where I had this a-ha moment, realizing that maybe (just maybe) I was creative. It was never a word that I had assigned to myself, and Kari helped me to rethink that word and identity. You can listen to that show here.

But today, Kari is back to catch up after adding another member to the Sowers family. We chat about the advice of making the habit before you buy the gear. Which, hello, I would have a lot more money if I had not bought 4 pairs of running clothes trying to make myself a runner.

She shares about her dream to be a Rockette, her pet peeve involving clever spelling for businesses and what she values in her closest friends. I loved catching up with Kari, she's one of the most personally encouraging guests I've had and I know you'll love hearing from her again.

My guest for Happy Hour #112 is Tara-Leigh Cobble. She's an author and musician that possesses a unique trio of gifts: as a conference keynote speaker, worship leader, and singer-songwriter. She has spent the past decade touring internationally and has contributed to more than 2,000 events for singles, college students, women's groups, and youth groups.

Although she has been standing on stages for more than a decade, her passion in recent years has been behind the scenes, planting and developing a network of discipleship groups. Nearly 200 men's and women's D-Groups (Discipleship Groups) meet in homes around the world to memorize scripture, study theology, and pray together. "We like to call it the CrossFit of Bible studies," she says, alluding to the intensity, accountability, community, and ultimately the joy of being in D-Group.

In our conversation, Tara-Leigh shares how D-Group got started out of a deep desire to know God and His Word. It started as a small group of strangers studying the Bible together and has grown exponentially in the years since. She shares about praying for authority in her life (who prays for that!?) and how God answered by letting her live with Matt and Lauren Chandler.

I was so convicted and encouraged by my conversation with Tara-Leigh. I think you'll walk away wanting to know the God of the Bible better. She does such a great job of describing the dangers of worshipping a god of our own making, and the treasure of knowing God's true character as it is revealed in His word.

My guest for Happy Hour #111 is Jen Bricker. Born without legs and placed for adoption at birth, Jen is an aerialist, acrobat and a state champion in power tumbling. She has appeared as a headliner at the prestigious Palazzo Hotel in Las Vegas, New York’s Lincoln Center, the Shangri-La Hotel in Dubai, and the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. In her new book, Everything is Possible, Jen writes about her faith, drive, and determination, and continues to prove to herself and others that nothing is impossible.

I loved talking with Jen so much. I think this episode may have more surprises in it than any before. I won't spoil them all, but I will tell you she casually mentions being on tour with a very famous popstar and she tells the story about discovering that an iconic American Olympian is her biological sister. How's that for a teaser?

I just know you're going to love this episode, love learning about Jen, and love hearing how God was so purposeful in Jen's circumstances to weave together such an amazing and powerful story. Jen has been so faithful in recognizing God's hand in her life and is using her story to make His name great.

To learn more about Jen and her journey, determination and perseverance, you'll want to grab a copy of her book: Everything is Possible.

My guest for Happy Half Hour #15 is Elyse Fitzpatrick. Elyse is a retreat and conference speaker, bestselling author and Director of Women Helping Women Ministries.  She has been married for more than 40 years and has three adult children and six grandchildren.

Elyse first appeared on the Happy Hour for episode #89 where she stole the show and became one of my all-time favorite guests. If you're in some need of some free counseling, scoot on over and give it a listen.

Today, Elyse is back after the recent release of her newest book, Home, where she writes about the idea of longing for heaven and how (praise God) things are not now how they will one day be. Elyse is one of my favorite authors, and I am so anxious to get a chance to read her latest work.

We also chat about how her childhood dream that had to die because she got pregnant, what she values in friendships and how much she hates cats on planes and dogs in restaurants. You know, the usual. I know you'll just love hearing from Elyse again.

My guest for Happy Hour #110 is Amanda Bible Williams. Amanda likes words and books more than just about anything. She holds bachelor’s degrees in English and psychology, nearly a master’s in religion, and a deep love for a farmhouse east of Nashville, Tennessee, where she lives with her husband and their three children. Chief Content Officer of She Reads Truth, Amanda spends her days happily rearranging sentences and explaining that her maiden name really is Bible.

Amanda was such a delight to chat with on today's episode. She and Raechel Myers have something really special going on over at She Reads Truth, where they're making Bible study approachable and accessible for everyday women. Her love for the Bible is seriously contagious. If you're anything like me, after listening to our conversation, you'll want to make yourself a fresh cup of coffee, grab your Bible and a journal and spend some time in God's word.

She and Raechel have just published their first "book book". I cried all the way through Chapter 7, and was so encouraged at the same time. She Reads Truth is on shelves now, so make sure to grab a copy.

You know we try to keep things real around the Happy Hour, so pardon my weepiness in this episode. We'll be back with lots of giggles in the shows to come.

Jana serves as the Director of LifeWay Kids and offers a wealth of experience and passion for kids ministry, education, and publishing.  She has written award-winning curricula, both interactive and traditional in nature, for the state of Texas, IMAX films and international authors, as well as churches and ministries.  She is also the author of Kids Ministry that Nourishes and co-author of Life Verse Creative Journal, which she wrote with her teen daughter.

Jana and her husband, Michael, along with their three kids made the journey from their home state of Texas to Tennessee where they serve in their local church and enjoy exploring the great city of Nashville!

In today's conversation, Jana and I chat about her role at LifeWay, creating curriculum for children's ministries across the country. She does a great job defining and explaining gospel-centered parenting and what that looks like in her family. We talk about the Austin Stone's new children's album releasing this Friday (you can pre-order here!). And of course, we have to chat about Willie Nelson, Coldplay, Ke$ha and a quick review on some Nashville restaurants.

Make sure to check out Jana's books listed below and her podcast with LifeWay Kids. And don't forget to pre-order Only Jesus today!

{You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. Just use the FB & Twitter links at the end of this post!}

She and her filmmaker husband live in a “tiny house” in the country outside of Austin, Texas on Green Acres, a boutique retreat for artists, families and sojourners. Kirsten is a frequent speaker on the topic of ethical fashion, empowering women,  and social entrepreneurship.

Kirsten joined me for Happy Hour #52 and is back to catch up on what she's been up to since we chatted last. My guest for Happy Hour #108 is the amazing Beth Moore. Beth is a dynamic teacher and a prolific Bible–study author whose public speaking engagements take her around the world to challenge tens of thousands. A wife and mother of two adult daughters, Beth lives in Houston, where she leads Living Proof Ministries and teaches an adult Sunday school class. Her first book with Tyndale House, So Long, Insecurity, was a NYT bestseller. Her debut novel, The Undoing of Saint Silvanus, released on September 20th.

It was my joy and honor to interview Beth. The Lord used her ministry in 1999 to draw me to Himself, and I was able to share that with her and thank her for being faithful to the call God had given her. She was so encouraging to me, and I hope to you too, to remind me that the call that God had on my life far exceeded my dreams and expectations.

In our conversation, Beth also shares about the process of writing her first novel, keeping it a secret, and finally sharing the draft with her youngest daughter. We chat about what she's reading and how much she adores her daughters and husband.

This episode is a little shorter than the typical shows, but I promise you every minute is worth it. It was a dream come true to finally chat with Beth, and I hope you are as encouraged as I was.

My guest for Happy Hour #107 is Deidra Riggs, author and speaker, and the visionary behind life-changing events for writers, artists, entrepreneurs, and other fabulous people who have an amazing dream. Through her engaging and relatable talks, practical and inspiring books, and first-class events, she works to cross cultural boundaries, build bridges with those who are different, and create more peace in the world while making it all feel like a fabulous celebration of life. When she’s not inspiring women to live life to the fullest and push past invisible boundaries, you can find her frolicking in the ocean, dancing to loud disco tunes, or hosting a group of her closest friends around the dinner table.

In today's conversation, Deidra shares what it's been like for her and her husband to embrace empty nesting. She shares that somewhere along the way while raising children, they decided to start building an empty nest. I love her perspective, and Aaron and I really try to make our marriage the top priority in our family, so that when our kids leave the nest, we still know each other and love each other. Deidra shares practical tips on how they've been successful and are still madly in love after 30 years.

She shares about loving her children through difficult circumstances and choices, her love for disco, her cartwheel regimen and her online book club for open discussion on all things hush hush. I absolutley loved my conversation with Deidra and I really hope you will too.

Christa Black Gifford joined me as my guest for Happy Hour #106. Christa is a dynamic worldwide speaker, worship leader and bestselling songwriter. She is a popular blogger, writes for The Huffington Post, and was the keynote for Women of Faith’s Revolve Tour. Her life goal is to provide resources for those broken by the pain of life, leading them into wholeness of heart and intimacy with Jesus.  She’s married to the love of her life, Lucas Gifford. They live in Nashville, with their son, Moses Grae Lionheart, a daughter in heaven, Luca Gold, and their newest addition, daughter, Birdie James. Christa and Lucas are expecting their fourth child in November.

In today's show, Christa and I chat about everything she has going on - from songwriting for a movie to growing another baby to moving houses. She shares how she and her husband endured a difficult season losing a child. I interviewed Christa last month for the Influence Network where she shares more about that experience. If you are interested in hearing more about their loss, you can check that out here. But in today's conversation, she shares about the powerful moment about how the final verse of one of my favorite worship songs, One Thing Remains, became even more true in the moments after her daughter's passing.

Christa also tells about a hilarious experience while touring with the Jonas Brothers, which she talks about like it's totally normal...like who doesn't tour with the Jonas Brothers? I'll let you hear it straight from her, but it involves a crazy fan and a 6th floor hotel room. That's all I am going to say.

Happy Hour #49 is with my friend Jenn Sprinkle. Jenn is a self proclaimed serial entrepreneur with a burden for dreamers and doers. After ten years in corporate america as a designer, traveling around the world with a dream job, she took a leap of faith and stepped out on her own and fully launched her own design and creative strategy business. Although her “pays-the-bills-day-job” continues to be her design business, her heart is for building and encouraging a community of dreamers, doers and entrepreneurs through The {Well} Studio. Inspired by her own journey to build a dream God called her to and the day-to-day struggles and doubts that come with building, she curated and self-published a book of prayers called 31 Days of Prayers for the Dreamers and the Doers in January 2015.

On today's show Jenn and I talk about her journey through starting businesses, writing a book, and how her and husband work together in their crazy adventures. Jenn opens up about her marriage struggles and how God has grown them together over the years as a couple. A few years ago Jenn and her husband both quit their jobs, sold everything, and completely changed the paths of their lives.

Jenn and I met at the If Gathering this past year and I loved everything about her as soon as we met! I know that you are going to love this show. Her transparency about her marriage problems early on in her marriage will encourage so many of you in your marriages.

Happy Hour #48 is with my friend Susie Davis. Susie Davis is an author, blogger, speaker and church founder. Susie has been married to Will Davis Jr., the founding and senior pastor of Austin Christian Fellowship, for twenty-nine years. They have three children: Will III (28) – a Baylor graduate now in ministry with his wife, Amy. Emily (25) – also a Baylor grad now in ministry with her husband, Kenton Boone. Sara (21) – a junior at the University of Texas.

Aside from family and ministry, Susie is helplessly addicted to horseback riding and McDonald’s coffee. In addition, one of her all time favorites is cooking and enjoying family dinners. She has written five books over the years.

On this show we discuss how we both ended up in radio accidentally and how much we both loved it, and also how hard it is to follow our passions individually when we also feel as though we are supposed to be giving so much to our family. Susie shares about what started her down the road of being a fearful person and how that ruled her world for so many years. We then discussed parenting older kids, and she literally gave me an individual counseling session about my boys and their girlfriends. It was rather funny, especially since I kept her on the line for about 10 minutes after our interview for more counseling!!  :)

Happy Hour #47 is with my friend Jess Connolly who I just love and adore! I met her last year at the Influence Conference and she was actually on episode #18 of The Happy Hour! Jess is passionate about speaking to women and inspiring them to walk with the Lord in the abundant life they have access to. Every conversation I have with Jess I leave feeling more inspired to live the life God has for me, and more in love with God. She has a way of making you feel as though you are the most important person in her world in that moment. Her and husband have four kids and live in Charleston, SC where they have planted a church and her company, Naptime Diaries, is located.

On this show we chatted about her overcoming her hatred of Summer, her new book, Wild and Free, that she just recently turned into the publisher, and releases in April of 2016. Jess explains the Influence Network and why they exist. Jess surprises me with her love of cheesy romantic novels about the South, and you will love the three things she's loving these days!

Happy Hour #41 with Melanie Dale. Melanie is a geek on a God-ride, a minivan mama and total weirdo who stinks at small talk. Author of Women Are Scary: The Totally Awkward Adventure of Finding Mom Friends, she's also a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs and an advocate for Children's HopeChest. Happy Hour #38 is with my friend Jessica Thompson. This is now Jesssica's second time to be on the Happy Hour and I love it and love her. She's one of my most fun guests that I have had on this whole time. I feel like I could sit with her over chips and salsa and laugh for hours. Jessica lives with her husband and three kids in Southern California. She's an author and speaker who has great things to say.

On this show we talked about how we both love the show Nashville, her newest book, grace for those around us, and her most recent crazy vacation. I compared Sister Wives to the Church, and then we both shared books we're loving now.

Jessica's latest book is called Everyday Grace: Infusing All Your Relationships with the Love of Jesus. This book tackles how we can be in relationships where you will get hurt, and your friends will let you down and yet we can still show them grace. I loved this book so much and it helped me re-evaluate the way I had put such big expectations on my kids.

Her and her husband run REFINE US, which is a ministry they founded in 2007. RefineUs Ministries using their story of failure, loss, and transformation to guide individuals, couples, churches, pastors, pastor’s wives and church planters towards a healthy marriage and family. It will challenge you. It will inspire you to keep going. It will ask you to pick each other up and run with grace and purpose. To leave ordinary behind as you move toward extraordinary.

On this episode of the Happy Hour Trisha and I talk about adoption and how God has moved in mutual friends of our lives, in our own lives, and how God is stirring Trisha's heart towards adoption. What life is like for a momma when her oldest son is graduating, and what it's like to allow our kids to begin to live an independent life. On today's show Meredith and I chat about how she ended up in China, and the amazing story of her parents adopting Brooke, the little girl she took care of during a summer internship. I also begged Meredith to give me all her parents secrets on raising kids that love to travel, love people, and want to serve people well. Happy Hour #35 is with my friend Melanie Shankle. You may know Melanie from her blog, The Big Mama Blog, where she's been cracking up all of us readers for years now.

Melanie lives in San Antonio with her husband and daughter. She is the author of three books, Sparkly Green EarringsThe Antelope in the Living Room, and her newest, Nobody's Cuter Than You, that just released this week on April 7th.

On the show today we talk about her book a lot, her friend Jen that she mentions in the book who is walking through cancer, how I started podcasting because of her and Sophie's podcast, talking with our kids about sex, the shows we watch, how much we both like baseball, college life, and how technology has ruined us all. I laughed so much in this podcast and loved every second of chatting with Melanie. I think that you will too.

Today's Happy Hour episode is exactly what I had in mind when I dreamed of my own podcast. One minute we're talking about the crazy things our kids say about sex, and the next minute we're talking about one of our friends struggling through cancer. It's the real talk that girlfriends have, and so this Happy Hour is one that you will love.

Today's guest on the Happy Hour podcast is Lindsey Paschal. Lindsey is a wife to Dan, and momma to two boys, one of which was born a few weeks ago. Previously to staying home full time Lindsey was a teacher. Last year she documented her journey to reading 52 books via her instagram account.  She ended up reading 56 books.

On this podcast we discuss Lindsey's life as a teacher, and go through all the books that she read. Because of this conversation I decided that I would try and read 36 books in 2015. Eeeekkk. Hopefully I can make that!

Lindsey and I both keep up with all of the books that we read on GoodReads. It's an easy way to keep record of books that you have read and a running list of books that you want to read. Whenever I hear about a new book I want to read I just add it to my "to-read" section and when I'm ready for a new book I have a whole list at my disposal.

Today’s guest on the Happy Hour Podcast is Rebecca Smith. Rebecca is the creator and owner of Better Life Bags and lives in Detroit with her husband and three kids. Her business has a remarkable impact on women in Detroit, who are earning a living by working for Better Life Bags.

On today's podcast we talk about how her business started, things you should do before we turn 30 (we are both past it!!), and how she can't do it all without the help she has - good word for us mommas trying to do it all! We also chat about how we made the decision on where to send our kids to school, why we don't see the news often, and of course our thoughts on Serial.

Today’s guest on the Happy Hour Podcast is Jessica Thompson and gosh I just love her. I met her for the first time this summer and since then I have loved getting to know her more from afar. Jessica is an author and has some great books out about parenting. Please get your hands on at least one of her books before the end of this year.

In this podcast we discuss how neither one of us are good at buying gifts for our husbands. At the time we recorded this I was looking for a gift for Aaron for his birthday, and I had no idea what to get him. He's so hard for me to buy gifts for.

We spent a lot of time talking about Jessica's newest book that she co-authored with her mom, ANSWERING YOUR KIDS' TOUGHEST QUESTIONS. We both realize how difficult it is to talk with your kids about things that are so hard, but boy is it so necessary.

Of course we talked about SERIAL because we both love it so much. At the time we recorded there were six episodes, and now they are up to ten. If you haven't taken the time to dive into this, we both highly recommend!

Today’s guest on the Happy Hour Podcast is my friend Tara Livesay. Tara lives in Haiti with her husband, Troy, and five of their seven kids. They have been living in Haiti for many years now and she works with Heartline Ministries and is a midwife. They average about 6-8 births a month at Heartline, and invest in the mom's lives from the beginning of pregnancy, during labor, and for post pregnancy support.

On this episode Tara and I discuss a lot about parenting. She's currently mom to seven that range from the age of 7 to early twenties. We also discussed short term missions and what that looks like to us Americans versus the Haitians. She gives us all great advice on how we serve the Haitian people in a healthy way.

Jamie writes at THE VERY WORST MISSIONARY. Her and her husband live in California and have three boys, one of which has already grown up and lives on his own. Jamie and I met each other a few years ago through some mutual friends, although we have never met in person. Isn’t that cool how in 2014 you can have friends that you have actually never met face to face. Love it!

In this podcast we discussed our kids growing up (she says middle school is the hardest), sex trafficking, Jamie’s trips with Exodus Road, and how Jamie is supposed to be writing a book.

This week's podcast is with  my friends Kimberly and Laura who both live on my street and all of our husbands work together. This was just like a normal conversation that we would have over coffee, except there were no kids running around everywhere. Today we chatted about letting our kids walk to neighbors houses, how we do birthday parties, chores for our kids, and how I hate wearing jackets in the winter.

Although I've been a parent for longer than these two, these women both are moms that I highly look up to as parents and value their thoughts on motherhood, life and living on mission. Love them, and you will too!

Laura is one of my oldest friends and her and her husband, Jimmie who is a worship leader at the Stone, moved here to Austin with us six years ago. They have two two girls, Veda who is three, and Mercy who is one. They live down the street from us and we absolutely love doing life with them.

Kimberly also lives down the street from us, and her husband Stew is also on staff at the Stone. They have four kids, Wesley Grant who is 9, Sally who is 8, Kelly who is 7, and Karis who is six. Their son, Kelly, has been home one year from Haiti.

Today’s guest on the Happy Hour Podcast is Kate Conner, who is the author of two books: Enough & 10 Things For Teen Girls. I first was introduced to Kate when I was given her book Enough to review. While reading her book I knew that I wanted to meet her and have her on the podcast, and I’m so happy that I did! She is just pure joy and someone that I would love to have lunch with often if we lived close enough to each other.

She writes at her site KATE CONNER where she encourages women, writes biblical truths, and simply shares her life with us.

Happy Hour #18 is with my friend Jessi Connolly. Jessi and I are online friends and so it's always super fun when I get to talk in person with friends that I only know from the internet. I will actually meet Jessi next week when I fly to Indiana for The Influence Conference. I'm super excited about this conference because I get to meet tons of great people that I know online and I'll be speaking to the ladies there, so that's even more exciting!

Jessi and I talk about how it all gets done in her world (surprise - it doesn't!), her work out plan , how she handles social media, what the Influence Network is, and how the prints go from idea to finished product.

This podcast is shorter than the normal ones, but I will for sure be asking Jessi to join me again because I literally have 100 things I can chat with her about! Hope you enjoy it!

Today's Happy Hour guest is my friend Amber Rose Zimel, and I just love everything about her!  Amber Rose and her husband, Adam, have five kids - four boys and one girl. They are also adoptive parents and their youngest was born in Ethiopia. Today Amber Rose and I talk a lot about parenting since between us we have nine kids. She is someone that I look up to a lot in parenting, so it was a joy to talk about raising kids with her.

Amber Rose shares her story of becoming a mom as a teenager and how her and Adam have then grown their family since then. We talk about talking with our kids about the big S word - sex. We both talk to our kids when they are young about this subject in hopes that we will be their influencers and not their friends.

We also share what books we're reading and just how dang hard this job of parenting is! You will love our conversations!

In this podcast Debra and I discuss instagram feeds and what celebrities we currently follow and I tell her 19 celebrities that the internet says we should follow. We also talk a lot about sex trafficking and what God has done in both of our lives and hearts with this. Debra shares the story of her son, Ronel, coming home after the earthquake from Haiti, and if you don't cry during her story  there's something wrong with you! I know the story and had tears in my eyes as she talked.

You will enjoy Debra's voice about advocating for women and adoption.

Today’s guest on THE HAPPY HOUR is my friend Ashley Benson. Ashley and I actually grew up together in Brownwood, TX and then reconnected later in life. Ashley is married, mother of two, pilates instructor, health advocate, and much more that involves health and fitness.

In this episode Ashley and I talk about her starting a small business as a personal trainer, why she started her health/fitness blog, her daughters new farm school, vacationing on a sailboat, tye4 (a new pilates method that she's teaching), renewing your wedding vows, dating, and I think she might have sold me on this fitness vacation idea by the end of our conversation!

Today’s guest on THE HAPPY HOUR is  Julie Hayes. The interesting thing about this podcast is that Julie and I have never met, but yet she contacted me about being on the show. She left a comment on my blog that said she’d love to interview me and ask me all the questions that she has for me. For some reason I just felt like this would be fun, and so we did it. When I recorded I knew that it might not work and then I could just can it if it didn’t. Good news is that it turned out great.

In this podcast we discuss books we’re reading (of course), parenting, our adoption of Amos, meeting Aaron, my time on the radio, Noonday Collection, and lots of other randomness!

Today’s guest on THE HAPPY HOUR is Rachel McCoy. Rachel is a newer friend of mine within the past few years. She's not only one of the most genuine and nicest people I know, but she's also beautiful. She's a wife, a past college athlete (Baylor Bears), a track coach, a lover of fitness and cooking, and is in the  midst of training for a mini sprint triathalon.

Rachel is married to Colt, who is a former Texas Longhorn and now plays in the NFL.  Rachel and Colt just moved to Washington for his job and so she's learning all about a new city. We chat about her life as a wife to an NFL player, fitness, Washington DC facts, favorite tv shows, Olivia Pope, beach vacations, Texas stuff, and much more.
