The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey

122-01

Happy 2017!! I am so excited to start off the year with Rachel Cruze as my guest for Happy Hour #122 is Rachel Cruze. As a #1 New York Times best-selling author and seasoned communicator, Rachel helps Americans learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She’s authored two best-selling books: Love Your Life, Not Theirs and Smart Money Smart Kids. The daughter of Dave Ramsey, she joined Ramsey Solutions in 2010 and uses the knowledge and experiences from growing up in the Ramsey household to educate others.

In today's conversation, we talk about what it was like growing up as a Ramsey, and the lessons she learned in a money conscious family. We chat about teaching our kids about the finiteness of money, and not letting our past mistakes with money keep us from making better choices in the future. Rachel also shares about her newest book about being content with your own life, and not coveting the lives around you. She shares how covetousness affects our finances and how she fights it with gratitude.

{You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. Just use the FB & Twitter links at the end of this post!}

Stephanie May Wilson

realgirlsguide_happyhourbanner3

Having just moved to a new city, and busy with work and family, author Stephanie May Wilson knew there had to be an easier way of creating deep friendships as a busy adult. So she wrote out some questions, invited over a few girls she barely knew, and as they answered the questions, they began to share their stories. That first night they laughed, cried, and spoke God’s truth into tender areas of each other’s lives and before they knew it, strangers became friends, and friends became best friends. Those questions became a 6-week small group guide that has achieved the same friendships in communities all over the country. Whether you're looking to start a cooking club with old friends, to go deeper with new friends, or to help a group of girls you lead connect in a deeper way — our lives are so much richer when we have best friends to share them with, and this guide is the perfect way to get there! Click here to download a free copy of the first week.

My guest for Happy Hour #121 is Erin Loechner. Erin is the founder of Design for Mankind, and has been speaking and blogging for more than a decade. Her heartfelt writing and design work has been showcased in The New York Times, Lucky, Parenting, Dwell, Marie Claire, Elle Decor, Huffington Post, and a two-season HGTV.com web special, garnering more than one million fans worldwide. She has spoken for and appeared in renowned international events for clients such as Walt Disney World, IKEA, Martha Stewart and Home Depot. Now nestled in a Midwestern town, Erin, her husband, and their children strive for less in most areas except three: joy, grace, and goat cheese.

If our conversation sounds like a personal counseling session, that's probably because it was. God has been doing a lot in my heart about where I find my approval, and my conversation with Erin was so timely and therapeutic. We talk about social media - the benefits, but also the pitfalls and dangers. We also chat about her upcoming book, Chasing Slow, and her thoughts and pursuits of a slower lifestyle. I read her book earlier this fall and highly recommend it. You can pre-order today for it's January 10 release.

Y'all, let me just take a quick minute to say thank you so much for an incredible year. 2016 was a great year for The Happy Hour with more than 3 million downloads! I'm so thankful for you listening to the show, loving it and sharing it with your girlfriends. You make this show possible and I am so grateful. We have some exciting things planned for 2017, so make sure to stay tuned. Enjoy your New Year's, have a happy hour with a friend, and we'll see you on the other side!

My guest for the Happy Half Hour #21 is Danielle Walker from Against All Grain. Danielle first joined me for episode #74, earlier this year. She's back today after the recent release of her newest cookbook, Celebrations

On today's show, we catch up about Danielle's latest Netflix binges, the qualities she values in her best friends, how she recharges with naps, massages and quality time with her kids and the dream of being a never-realized dream of being a ballerina.

I loved catching back up with Danielle, and I know you'll love hearing from her again. And from The Happy Hour team, very Merry Christmas to you and your family! We're praying the Lord would be near to your family this season and that you would experience the glory and grace of Jesus.

My guest for Happy Hour #120 is Kennesha Buycks. Kennesha is a Southern transplant from Alabama to the Pacific Northwest. She and her family now live in the Seattle area. Kennesha has a heart and passion for connecting others, gathering, and seeing those around her flourish in ways they could never imagine. She often expresses this passion through various creative mediums, including inspirational styling and design. When Kennesha is not busy being a wife or a mama to her four kids, she spends her time writing, blogging, and encouraging others.

Kennesha and I have been trying to connect for nearly a year, and the time has finally come! In today's episode, we chat and commiserate about being old enough for a 20 year high school reunion and our anxieties about actually attending. Kennesha shares about her life before Jesus, and her journey to following Him even at the potential cost of sacrificing a relationship.  And you'll hear about her work with Restoration House and the balance and challenges of running a ministry and business. Finally, you'll love learning about Kennesha's children and how she and her husband are working hard to break generational cycles in their family.

I hope you enjoy the show today. Make sure to tune in for the last two shows of the year - this week's Happy Half Hour and next week is episode #121 with Erin Loechner.

119-01

My guest for Happy Hour #119 is Ginger Gilbert Ravella. Ginger is a military wife, mother of five, stepmother of two, widow, writer and national speaker.  At 36 years old, she faced the sudden tragic loss of her husband in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the horrors that followed. He left behind five beautiful children, all under the age of 9 years old.  Her late husband, Major Troy Gilbert, an Air Force F-16 pilot, gave his life while saving twenty Special Operation soldiers, defining a true American war hero. Ginger now shares her heart-wrenching story of loss and hope and is the Director of the Speakers Bureau for The Folds of Honor, a non-profit charity who raises educational funds for fallen and wounded soldiers’ families.  She travels internationally and speaks on behalf of the foundation.  She is remarried to another widower, Colonel Jim Ravella, who lost his wife to breast cancer.  Together, they share their testimonies at churches and have recently written an upcoming book, “Hope Found”, to encourage anyone who seeks peace in life’s times of suffering. Ginger and Jim currently live in San Antonio with their children.

In our conversation, Ginger shares about learning the devastating news that her husband had been killed and his body taken. She tells about the days and months following his death and the depression that gripped her, but how God rescued her and taught her to not waste her story. In an unexpected twist, Ginger tells about meeting her now husband, their short dating relationship and quick marriage and how they've learned to mesh two different families with similar stories of grief and loss.

Grab your tissues because this episode had me in tears. Ginger's honest testimony of wrestling with God in her despair and depression resonated with me so much. If you have faced tragedy or extreme suffering, I think you'll feel like you have a friend in Ginger, and feel encouraged by her vulnerable transparency.

My guest for the Happy Half Hour #20 is my friend Jessica Honegger, founder and CEO of Noonday Collection. Jessica is old fave around here at The Happy Hour. She's been on episode #5, #55, and one of the guests for the very first live event

Jessica and I were able to get together and record in the actual flesh at her office here in Austin. We make our rounds through our normal half hour show questions, but I think you'll love hearing her dream of a communal life that she's having to let die, the quality of vulnerability that she values in her best friends and the best advice she's every received.

I know you'll enjoy today's show and hope you feel inspired by my conversation with one of the very best business women I know.

My guest for Happy Hour #118 is Emily Ley. Emily is the Founder and Creative Director of Emily Ley Paper & Gifts. She is also the creator of the bestselling Simplified Planner—a daily agenda for what matters most— and author of Grace Not Perfection. Raised in Pensacola, Florida, Emily graduated from the University of West Florida with degrees in English, creative writing, and public administration. She later became the executive director of the city ballet. From there, she worked in nonprofit management and public relations before launching her brand in 2008. Following the success found at its online home, the Emily Ley brand quickly grew to be carried in retail outlets across the United States and around the world. Emily has been recognized with numerous awards, including Best New Product at the National Stationery Show as well as being named a Top 10 Designer to Watch in 2015 by Stationery Trends Magazine. Emily lives with her husband and three children in Tampa, Florida.

Emily shares about growing her business from the ground up, all while remaining a debt-free company. She talks about difficult learning curves and decisions that she has had to make to maintain the company values - including a recent decision to cut down on wholesale to be able to better connect with the customer.

Because of the recent release of Emily's first book, we chatted about the book writing process, how her book was born and the painstaking decisions of a cover design. And Emily also shares some of her family's easy and totally doable holiday traditions.

I loved getting the chance to get to know Emily. I know you're going to love her, and feel inspired by the way that she has grown her business, while staying true to her initial goals and values.

My guest for today’s episode is Ann Voskamp. Ann is the wife of a down-to-earth farmer; a book-reading mama to a posse of seven; and the author of the New York Times bestseller One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Arewhich has sold more than one million copies. Her latest book, The Broken Way: A Daring Path into the Abundant Life released in October 2016.  Millions do life with her at her daily photographic online journal, one of the top 10 most widely read Christian websites:  www.annvoskamp.com

Admittedly, I was a little nervous about chatting with Ann. She has a sophisticated and incredibly intelligent aura about her that intimidated me from afar. But, gracious, I loved talking with her and getting to know her a little bit. In our conversation, Ann shares about the heart behind her newest book, The Broken Way. We chat about the temptation to present a polished life, but how God uses our brokenness to bring healing to our own hearts and perseveres the hearts around us.

We chat about everything from their adoption journey to the refugee crisis to living modern day Esther lives. If you need a hug and a good kick in the pants, this is your episode. I think you'll feel so encouraged by Ann and also a push to use your influence to be a minister the oppressed around you.
