The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey

My guest for The Happy Hour # 197 is Amena Brown. Amena is a poet, speaker, author, and event hostNamed one of Rejuvenate Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 Changemakers, Amena is the author of five spoken word CDs and two non-fiction books. She has performed and spoken at events across the nation, and she and her husband, DJ Opdiggy, live in Atlanta.

On the show today, Amena and I talk about everything from grief, infertility, ministry, and the creative process she goes through to bring a poem to life on stage. One thing's for sure - I could never do her job!

Amena and I dive right in and start talking about the feelings of living a life you didn't think you'd live. Amena shares how she learned to grieve the loss of expectations, and how she realized, "to experience joy most fully, I had to also experience the grief." We also talk about the importance of finding those people who will walk beside you and be truly present with you amidst different seasons of life.

In the second half of the show Amena describes her creative process as a poet and you guys, it's incredible. We talk about performance as a craft and ministry, and she tells us how we can find spoken word in our own communities. Amena then discusses her involvement in international ministry. Amena reminds us how important it is to really know the organizations you're going with, what they represent, and most importantly who and how they're partnering and led by those in that country.

My guest for The Happy Hour # 196 is Rachel Henry. Rachel is wife to her high school sweetheart, Simon, and they have six beautiful children whom she's home-schooled for the last two years. Rachel and her family reside in Florida where they like to live like they're on vacation every day!

Friends, I'm going to get straight to it - today's show is difficult to listen to. It's difficult, but incredibly powerful and full of hope and healing amidst tragedy. A few warnings: in the episode today Rachel talks about the night that her home was broken into and she was raped. I encourage younger ears to have an adult listen first. Also, if you struggle with fear around these topics, have a trusted friend listen first and guide you on if you should listen and/or any parts you should skip.

What Rachel has experienced is absolutely horrific. As you listen to her share her story, you will also hear loud and clear the hope she carries, and how God has been with her and her family through their journey. I was floored listening to her describe the trial and how she faced her attackers and told them she forgave them, and how she's prayed for them.

In the last part of the show, Rachel talks about her journey of healing and how crucial it was to find the right therapy. Rachel describes the effectiveness of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with traumatic experiences and how it could help others.

I am incredibly grateful to Rachel for her vulnerability and sharing her story so that others would be encouraged and have hope.

My guest for The Happy Hour # 195 is Amy Hannon. Amy is the owner of Euna Mae's, a kitchen boutique that is not only is a special place to locals, but has also become a destination shop for many around the country. You can also find Amy on her cooking show on Northwest Arkansas' NBC affiliate, a food blog, and her recently published "Love Welcome Serve" cookbook.

I know many of you are familiar with Amy's super cute shop Euna Mae's - and don't worry if you thought her name was Euna Mae (she gets that a lot)! Amy and I begin today's show talking about the bittersweet emotions that come when your kids begin to leave the nest. Amy is momma to three and she shares about her youngest graduating just this past weekend!

We then talk about what hospitality means to her. Amy has never met a stranger and and that "hospitality is making people feel like they matter" - I love the way she describes that. Amy and I also discuss how in our culture we can get the meaning of hospitality wrong and shift the focus inward instead of serving others from the heart.

In the last part of the show, Amy shares how she never intended to be a shop owner, cooking show host, or write a cookbook. But, when she asked herself what her God dream was, God answered her prayer in big ways!

I had so much fun talking with Amy today. She shows that we all can show hospitality to anyone and everyone, and her story is an encouragement to ask ourselves what our dreams are and not be afraid to go to God with those dreams.

My guest for The Happy Hour # 194 is Ruth Chou Simons. Ruth is an artist, writer, entrepreneur, and speaker. As author of the bestselling book GraceLaced and creator of the GraceLaced online shoppe, blog, and Instagram community, she shares scriptural truths daily through her hand-painted artwork and words. Ruth and her husband, Troy, live in Colorado and are grateful parents to six sons—their greatest adventure.

Today's show was one of those conversations where we could have kept talking for hours. Many of you may know Ruth from her beautiful art and from Instagram, and you're going to love her even more after listening to today's show.

Ruth and I start out the conversation talking about how she got her name when she immigrated to America - you may not believe this but, it came from a man who didn't even know her and he named her parents at the same time as well! We discuss the importance of teaching culture to our children, and making sure it doesn't get in the way of learning about God's grace.

Ruth then shares the amazing story of how her mom came to know Jesus and how a woman she barely knew invested in her mom. It's such an encouragement that our actions can make a bigger impact than we may ever realize!

In the last part of the show, we discuss the different strategies Ruth follows in how she runs her business and how she decides what gets posted on Instagram. We also talk about fighting for our marriages. No matter what the situation, we always need to remind ourselves of what is true and tell ourselves the Gospel.

You guys, I'm going to warn you now - after you listen today's show you're going to want to pack up your things and start a farm! Lynsey and I start out our conversation Lynsey giving me great advice on how I can be a better mama to my mama cat and her new kittens.  It turns out that I may have more kittens at my house than I thought!

Lynsey shares how she and her husband Jason went from firefighter and photographer to full-time farmers. For any of you thinking of starting something new or following a dream, you're going to be so encouraged as you hear her describe how they started from scratch, had many failures, and then mastered the ways of farming (You Tube may have been involved!).

My guest for The Happy Hour # 192 is Mo Isom. Mo is a New York Times bestselling author, speaker, blogger, and former All-American goalkeeper for the Louisiana State University soccer team. Mo has been featured in Sports Illustrated, appeared on ESPN SportsCenter Top-10 Plays, Ellen, ESPN, CBS, The 700 Club, and countless other platforms. She, her husband, Jeremiah Aiken, and their two children live in Atlanta, Georgia.

When I received Mo's new book, Sex, Jesus, and the Conversations the Church Forgot, I wasn't sure what to expect. But you guys, I loved this book and the message she brings. A little note about the show today - we discuss the issues of sex and pornography so mommas, you may first want to take a listen to the show on your own.

Mo and I dive right into the hard stuff and start talking about sexual sin. In Mo's book she discusses her past and struggle with sexual sin. At 19, she felt Jesus calling her to an intimacy fast. Mo describes how the fast reset her heart, but also when she started dating again (her future husband!), she saw how quickly the temptations could set back in and we must continually fight against our sins.

We then discuss the problems of pornography and the truth that so many women are silently struggling with this addiction. Mo describes the problem so well when she says, "it fulfills our instant urge, our instant want, but it never satisfies."  Mo and I both get fired up talking about having this conversation with our children. We both believe so strongly in the importance of heart transformation and relationship so we can be ready when the world throws out all its "false sexpectations".

I could have talked with Mo for hours and I know you're going to love our conversation too!

My guest for The Happy Hour # 191 is Christine Caine. Christine is an Australian-born, Greek-blooded activist, author and international speaker. Christine has a passion for justice, and together with her husband, Nick, founded the anti-human trafficking organization, The A21 Campaign, which received The Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice in 2017. In 2015, they founded Propel Women, an organization designed to honor the calling of every woman, empower her to lead, equip her for success, and develop a sense of purpose. Christine and her family make their home in Southern California.

Christine has been one of the most requested guests for me to have on The Happy Hour, and I am so excited for you guys to hear the show today. Christine's passion is contagious, and I know you will be encouraged, energized, and inspired!

Christine and I start off talking about what it means to speak truth in love, and how proclaiming the truth with boldness should not be out of the ordinary. Christine shares her story including how, at 33, she found out she was adopted, and the impact of enduring 12 years of abuse. She vividly describes the moment when Jesus began the transformation of her life. She says, "Jesus saved my soul...the Word renewed my mind and changed my life."

Christine and I then talk about how our lives look when we live with an orphan spirit instead of truly believing our identity as daughters of a king. We talk about how we react to the unexpected shows truth about our faith. She reminds us as we all face hurt and troubles in our life that what Jesus did for us is bigger than what people have done to us - Jesus is better!

You guys, there is so much good stuff in this show that you'll want to jot down - so grab your pen and paper and get ready to hear some powerful truths!

My guest for The Happy Hour # 190 is Jackie Hill Perry. Jackie is a writer and artist whose work has been featured on such publications as the Washington Times and The 700 Club. Since being saved from a lifestyle of homosexuality, she has been compelled to use her speaking and teaching gifts to share the light of the gospel of God as authentically as she can. She is signed to Humble Beast Records and released her debut album, The Art of Joy, in 2014. At home, she is a wife to Preston and Mommy to Eden.

For two years I've been working on getting Jackie on the show, and I am so excited to share our conversation with you today. On today's episode we cover some challenging topics: racial issues and homosexuality. I know these topics can bring us into uncomfortable or tense spaces, but I believe talking about hard issues is valuable and important, and my hope is that we can all be listeners and learners in these spaces.

Jackie and I begin the show talking about gospel diversity and the power of indifference. She describes how we can gain knowledge about the issues, but not take that knowledge and change how we live out our lives. The perspective she gives about the impact of indifference and inaction is powerful.

In the second half of the show, Jackie shares her story of how she was living a life of homosexuality and how God pursued her and saved her in a way only God could.  You are going to love hearing her talk about how her public ministry began just FIVE months after she decided to follow Jesus - her first public testimony was all because she wanted a free t-shirt! You guys, Jackie is bold and she speaks some powerful truths. When I asked her if she was afraid to fail, she said "Either I trust God or I don't... If I fall, then I fall and I get up and trust God some more".

{You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. Just use the FB & Twitter links at the end of this post!}

My guest for The Happy Hour # 189 is Tova Sido. Tova is a Jesus lover, author, speaker, and mom who lives in Dallas. Tova is passionate about helping others see God's incredible healing power for their lives and encourage them to become the people God created them to be.

When asked what Tova wanted to be when she grew up, she always knew her answer: Mom. On today's show, Tova shares her story of becoming mom to six children - three children who are in heaven, and three children she adopted from Ghana. As you can imagine, Tova's story of becoming a mom did not unfold as she expected.

Tova talks about the births and losses of her three beautiful children and when it seemed the sadness would overwhelm her. Tova speaks honestly about how she felt isolated - she wasn't sure how to interact with the world, and the world didn't know how to interact with her. But, an unexpected job offer at the end of what she thought was simply a counseling session with her pastor, started her on a path to regaining her joy. At the end of our conversation, we hear how a mission trip to Ghana became the starting point for how Tova brought home three of her children.

You guys, listening to Tova's story today was such an encouragement when we feel like we just can't make it through. Tova tells us "If you allow it, the joy will always supersede the pain", and with the Lord it will truly be a peace and joy that surpasses all understanding.

My guest for The Happy Hour # 188 is Layla Palmer. Layla is a storyteller/photographer whose passion is sharing home and lifestyle inspiration. She is a contributor for HGTV.com, and her home and work have been featured in numerous publications including HGTV Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, and Good Housekeeping.

Layla starts out the show telling us how in efforts not to fall for her now husband Kevin while they were working together, she kept herself quietly busy in a corner painting pictures of cartoon cats (yes, you read that right). After they got married, Kevin started passionately seeking Jesus, and she talks about how watching him simply being a child of God made her take notice. I love her story of the moment she felt changed everything when in the darkest season of their marriage, she and Kevin encountered Jesus in the drive-thru of a Krystal Burger.

Layla and I both have adopted children from Haiti, and at the end of the show we talk about some of the challenges we've seen our children face - including wanting them to recognize their preciousness and the difficulty in establishing that feeling of permanence for them.

I loved my conversation with Layla and also love following her on Instagram - her intention of educating, entertaining, and encouraging comes through all of her stories and posts. And speaking of Instagram, come find me @JamieIvey!  I've partnered with Starfish Project to host a contest that will begin April 12 where five winners will receive a signed copy of If You Only Knew and $100 gift certificate to Starfish Project!
